How Children Learn Language in a Montessori Classroom

We prepare children to read, write and express their thoughts through the Montessori Method.

One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child. – Dr. Maria Montessori

Almost every lesson in a Montessori classroom ties back to language. Our youngest children learn vocabulary words for their clothing, themselves, their friends, and everything else within their classroom environment. Older children begin to learn to identify which letters make which sounds and how they go together to form words.

Our Geography and Math lessons include language components because as new concepts are introduced to the children, we have to explain what they are, how they work, and more. Due to this, the children are continually exposed to language lessons and often become quite verbal.

Our youngest toddlers often begin the Montessori toddler program almost non-verbal or with very few words but as they’re exposed to the environment and the older children in the classroom, they experience what’s referred to as the “explosion of language”. A child who may only speak a handful of words one month might be rattling off full sentences a few months later because of this amazing multi-age classroom environment and the approach to language development in our school.

As the children enter Transition and Primary the focus moves from language development to preparing them for reading and writing in elementary school.

Sugar Bugs Hide in Your Tongue
A Yelp testimonial from one of our parents
“Great school! My son went there before he went to elementary school and my daughter goes there now. I’ve always been impressed with the level of commitment from the school’s owners. They are always looking for ways to make things exciting for the kids and it really makes a difference. I was so impressed when my little girl came home from KSMS one day and was so eager to brush her teeth! She even brushed her tongue because “the sugar bugs like to hide in your tongue”. I would definitely recommend this preschool to anyone looking in the area. I have nothing but praise for this school!” – Nancy G.
